TATTOO AFTERCARE
Aftercare instructions
1) Remove your bandage in 3 to 4 hours
2) After the bandage is removed, thoroughly wash the tattoo area with antibacterial soap and warm water for 20 to 40 seconds with your fingertips, then rinse. Gently blot dry with a single used paper towel.
3) For best healing results do not re-bandage your tattoo. Wash your tattoo twice a day for the first 24 to36 hours. After this time your tattoo will begin to dry out and start to feel a little tight like a sunburn, this is the point where you apply a light coat of unscented Lubriderm to the tattoo. Do this once or twice a day until your tattoo is done flaking and fully healed. Do not use anything other than non-scented Lubriderm petroleum-based products i.e. Vaseline or Aquaphor may interfere with the healing process if used to liberally.
4) Your tattoo will most likely be a little flakey, sometimes the flakes will even be the same color as the ink, this is normal. DO NOT pick at these flakes or rub them off, we know it itches, just slap it if it’s driving you crazy. Picking at it can scar a new tattoo.
5) For the first two weeks DO NOT expose your tattoo to direct sunlight or tanning bed. No swimming in saltwater, chlorinated or freshwater. DO NOT submerge your tattoo in a hot tub, bathwater or sit in a sauna. DO NOT pick or scratch your tattoo until it is done flaking and shiny, this could cause scarring or infection. DO NOT let friends or strangers touch your new tattoo. Wash your hands before touching your new tattoo or applying lotion!!! Bacteria + new tattoo = infection, don’t be a dumbass!
6) Consult a healthcare practitioner at the first sign of infection or an allergic reaction. Report any diagnosed infection, allergic reaction, or adverse reaction, resulting from the application of the tattoo to the tattoo artist and the Texas Department of State Health Services, tattoo, and body piercing program at 1-888-839-6676.
Everyone has a preferred way to heal a tattoo. Aftercare can vary from artist to artist. Saniderm bandages have a different healing process, your artist will discuss those options with you if the wrap is used. The directions below offer a great universal guide to heal almost any tattoo.
